Able to grow up in the 90s during my teenage phase has been a unforgettable era where I got to enjoy a different kind of rock music that no artists or bands today can reproduce that same flavour. I love pop-punk, ska, melodeath, numetal and grunge music and always saved as much pocket money to buy those niche cassettes and CDs from Roxy Music (only those hardcore music lovers knows Roxy). The sentiment side of me also love the 80-90s long curly hairs pop-rock ballad bands... REO Speedwagon, Scorpions, Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Heart, Mr Big, Firehouse, Foreigner, Bad English, Telsa, Extreme, Saigon Kick, Guns N Roses i.e.
Since secondary school day I always envy friends who can strum their guitars and secretly wanted to learn but never have the chance. Growing up older in polytechnic days, I bought my first bass guitar and try to self learn from books and hanged out at guitar shops for hours just to watch how the experts play. Hey there was no such thing as Youtube or social media to learn and it was pretty much picking up all from zero. My first introduction to jamming with a band was influenced by one of my secondary school friend Eugene, who was a hardcore J-rock guitarist. He was into Lunar Sea and X-Japan in the late 90s thus asked me to be his bassist. The first full song I learnt was Lunar Sea's "I for You" and subsequently I got to know more musicians through www.soft.com.sg (a local music forum). In summary I did jammed with a few bands but my most memorable was to be part of this short-lived punk band called "Homemade Muffins". We even took part in competition together but alas shortly we split up due to personal commitment.
Anyway it's nice looking back how I actually picked up guitar and bass for many years even though I'm just a slightly better than amateur level. So I really envy to the guitarists these days where information is so easily available to learn without attending classes and can accelerate their learning process so do cherish the opportunities my friends out there! keep on jamming!
